Salams Gerard
I attended the lecture last Sunday (9th March) in which the topic was “Marriage in Islam”and thought it was brilliant.
It answered a lot of the question burdened in my mind, and I thought that it contained a lot of information not only do I, but may other need and didn’t know.
I personally think it’s imperative that Marriage courses are held in Australia – Perth, so as to reduce the divorce rates amongst Muslim youth. Had my fiancee and I not attended the lecture, we would think that marriage life is normal as to the life that we live now, which is far from the truth. We now know ( a little bit) of what is expected from the both of us when we become husband and wives.
Will you be organising anymore classes on marriages?
Also, just another suggestion, maybe the Maulana can give a lecture on the importance of praying, fasting etc and the consequences of not following Allah’s commands. I think we need to drill into some of these youths mind that what they’re doing (drinking, clubbing etc) is haram. Because some of them think it’s a norm.

Masitah
Wasalaams Masitah,
Thanks for your support, its very much appreciated. About the lecture, i will be posting up all the questions asked with brief dot-point answers shortly inshallah (just busy at uni atm). I think another lecture on marriage would be great, with emphasis on practical advice for those getting married shortly or recently married. Maybe this would be better as an intensive workshop? I think providing people with resources (books etc) would be a great idea as well. I hope this helps?
About future topics on ‘virtues of ibadah’ that sounds like a great idea! i will add it to the list. Please tell anyone else about the lectures you might think is interested.

Gerard
Salaams Gerard,
Hows it going?
Nice meeting you and everyone else at the lecture today. (I was the one in light green).
In Response to the venue issue, I just looked up the price for booking the Geog LT2 @ UWA and its $65 an hour. So approx ~$130 for the usual two hour sesh … Wawaweewa. There’s a list of all the venues for hire at UWA & their prices per hr at http://www.timetable.uwa.edu.au … under Venues Online Booking à External Hirers Venues Booking Form. I wonder if you can book the venues any cheaper by going through UWA MSA, would you happen to know?
I’ll search around the UWA campus when Uni starts again on Tuesday for possible alternatives. So many lecture theatres and group meeting rooms available, there has GOT to be a suitable venue to host these talks… thinking caps on everyone
If we can’t find a venue for next lecture, provided its not raining, there’s always the Sunken Garden Theatre at UWA. It’s an outdoor grassed amphitheatre setting, and it’s got a main stage area, although its pretty much all terraced lawns and gardens (hence the name). Heard that area’s used for the drama productions. But if there’s people who have a problem with being outdoors, or allergic to grass or something, we’ll just scrap that idea!
Alright this post getting pretty long so for now ill end it here =]
Dita
Wasalaams Dita,
It was a pleasure meeting you today as well. Regarding the lecture theater thank you for doing the research. I *think* that booking through the UWA MSA we will get us a 50% discount. I will have to confirm with Br. Ihsan, but i think that is how things work. So for the normal 2 hour session it will *hopefully* only cost us $65. I think this is more than acceptable, and we should have no problem raising this money for each lecture session. But i also like the idea of using the sunken garden, maybe a picnic sometime before one of the lectures?
ooo picniccc I like thatttttt
how about the Musholla?
or even on one of the lawns and that might even attract non-muslims to join and listen about what Islam is about
So lovely to see you again Ditaaa, we must must catch up k
picnic sounds like a great idea! yeh one of the lawns around campus would be good for that.. c’mon people, breathe in some fresh air
yes Nadia nice catching up with u after like, 10yrs long time no see … ill call u sometime yeh =]
$65 is pretty good, and if we do Nadia’s mums suggestion at the lecture of $5/a head or more for those who can, then it should be a piece of cake…speaking of cake, that chocolate cake at the lecture was good. Thx to the lovely lady who made it, we hope its not the last time..haha
Salam everyone!
The only problem I can think of with a picnic is that you wouldnt be able to use any audio equipment, and based on the number of people that might attend, some people may not be able to hear the lecture – unless we all kinda sat close in together, and I dont know if thats really possible *_*
There is also the fact that whilst the Sunken Gardens are a public place, it might be intrusive on other families maybe having picnics nearby (I know its good for dawah, but I’m imagining if I’m having a picnic with my family, and all of a sudden a group of Christians park themselves nearby and start having a loud lecture amongst themselves about Christianity – I would be quite annoyed!).
The Musholla might be a better place coz
a) then we could use audio equipment
b) if it’s too hot outside, at least we’ll be in air conditioned comfort
c) it wont be so intrusive on other people in a public place
d) it’s easier to find!
e) We can all salat together if we wanted to! hehehe
My two cents!
)
Rin
By the way, charging Muslims $5 a head is a good idea – but maybe for Non-Muslims who are attending the lecture, it’s free for them. They did a similiar thing during other lectures, and it worked well
Rin
Salams everyone,
Why not use one of the Muslim Schools, maybe AIC Thornlie or Kewdale.
Gerard you wanted to know by the end of this week right? Well, I can only find out if we are allowed to use the Muslim school (the one at AIC Thornlie) at the end of this week. We might be able to use it for free!!!
If we’re allowed to use it, why not we keep the UWA geology lecture hall just for the next lecture, and then have the following lecture at AIC – If we’re allowed to use it.
PLUS!
Even if we have to pay to use their facility, it’s going towards the school or the mosque, which is beneficial for us as we’re helping the Muslim community out right?
What do ya reckon?
Masitah
I agree with Rinnie,
They usually use the Sunken Garden to take photo’s for wedding etc right?
What if there’s another function there? Will we be in the way?
Assalamu’alaikum All
Masitah, the Muslim Women’s Support Centre is looking at organising pre-marital courses (Islamic knowledge – Sh Faisal and others and other ‘life skills’ workshops including cooking classes for brs and srs). At this stag we would like to know how many would be interested, so if any of you are interested please email info@mwsc.com.au.
Also in relation to ‘active participation’ in society … we need some volunteers for a youth Sports for Peace event this Sunday. Volunteers are needed as team leaders (you don’t necessarily have to be sporty) as well as some kitchen hands (mature adults who can fry things…2 shifts 10-1 and 1-3) if you are able to assist please call Wajma at the MWSC office 94515696 or mob 0421 964 795 ASAP.
Wassalam.
Re: Sunken Gardens as a venue, a small group of us sisters did once have a Halaqah (Islamic Discussion group) there.
Part-way through, we noticed people formally dressed congregating around us. We continued our discussions nonetheless… Finally, a man in a suit and tie walked over to us and shyly said, “Excuse me, I’m sorry to interrupt, but I’m actually getting married here today…”
Salaams everyone,
how are things going? Its such a beautiful day, pity i have to be a uni
Anyway about these suggestions.
- Masitah thanks for suggesting some new venues, *if* we carnt book UWA, i will be in touch regarding AIC. But it looks like we will be able to book for the rest of the semester. i will know by the end of the day.
- The ‘Picnic’ idea sounds great! why dont we have a picninc/BBQ over at Matilda bay after one of the lectures? or before maybe?
- if there are any other suggestions, could we move these posts to the latest thread i have created ‘Improving the lectures’? that would be great.
Peace out
