In recent years, the focus on Islam in Western nations has become significant, particularly the way in which Muslims and Christians can live harmoniously in these nations.
Key events such as Pope Benedict XVI’s address to Regensburg University in September 2006, as well as the Danish Cartoon controversy subsequently, have led to global tensions between Muslims and Christians. It is essential that Muslim and Christian communities strive to build bridges of understanding and engage in mutual respect.
”Islam and The West”, a lecture delivered by Anwar Ibrahim, is inspired by this noble objective.
Anwar Ibrahim, former Deputy Prime Minister and the current Leader of the Malaysian Opposition, is regarded by many as one of the preeminent ambassadors of Islam in the West. He will be joined by Professor James Haire, the Executive Director of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture.

Issued in October 2007, and endorsed by 138 Muslim scholars and leaders, A Common Word Between Us and You is an open letter to Christian leaders everywhere. It is an historical and unprecedented document that further paved the way in developing deeper and more enriching relationships between people of faith.

I will be posting today’s lecture (31st March) in a few days. To download just right click on the link and press ’save as’.
It is good to be back posting on the website, after a long delay! We have finally managed to secure a regular lecture series once again at UWA, but the time has changed to Tuesday 1.00 – 1.45pm (see post below). I will be uploading the MP3’s of the lectures if you cant make it. We will be trying to organise more one off lecture events that address certain relevant issues in our community.
In the meantime below is a fantastic website full of amazing lectures (MP3 format) and Khutbahs Shaykh Abdul Hakim Murad (T.J. Winters) has delivered. The Shaykh is a senior lecturer of Islamic Studies at Cambridge and has studied in Cario, Yemen and other traditional places of scholarship. They are updated weekly. Topics include Purpose of the Sacred Law, The Quranic Jesus (a), Islam, Marriage, and Sexuality, living and dying and God, science and the new Atheism. They are some of the best lectures i have heard!
Please be informed of our new Islamic lecture series at UWA university (refer to attachment) held every Tuesday at 1.00pm at the Austin lecture theater, UWA.
The lectures are specifically designed to appeal to a wide audience, especially the youth and non-Muslims. So invite your non-Muslim friends along.
The lectures are free and of a high academic standard.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain a better understanding of Islam and negate the many misconceptions of the faith.

Below is a brilliant fatwa by Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti denouncing terrorism and its abhorrent participants. His legal reasoning and clarity is simply amazing, a clear indication of the rigorous nature of traditional Islamic jurisprudence.
Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti was born in Malaysia and was educated from a young age in the classical Islamic sciences at scholastic madrasasof East Java with a long tradition in Shafi’ijurisprudence. Among the best known authorities with whom he studied were the jurists, theologians and Sufis: Imam al-Fadani, Shaykh Ibn Mahfuz al-Hajini, and Habib ‘Aydarus al-Habshi. He has travelled widely; and in addition to the specific licenses to teach (ijazas) from his systematic training, he has also received general ijazas from teachers beyond his homeland, especially in Morocco and the Middle East. Shaykh Afifi is presently a Research Fellow in Islamic Theology at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and teaches at Oxford University. His doctoralthesis investigates a newly discovered medievalmanuscript of an advanced theological work by Islam’s greatest theologian, Imam al-Ghazali.
Below is the audio from our 12th lecture, ‘Sex and Sexuality in Islam’. I have also attached a small booklet Mawlaana Faizel wanted to include, titled ‘Islamic teachings on Sexual intimacy’. If anyone is interested i have also included my notes on ‘Comparative Sexuality: Christianity and Islam’. Enjoy
